CanAble was set up in 2003 as a pilot scheme in association with Alupro and Fylde Borough Council; there were two very separate drivers.
It had become clear through individual Person Centred Planning meetings that many service users wanted to participate in meaningful daytime activity, for which preferably, they were being paid.
In addition, the Government was launching policy on the environment and waste recycling. Locally, the Borough Council had embarked upon their most ambitious project with the community – to recycle as much household waste as possible.
As a community group, we offered to play as large a role as we could!
Our success has been very impressive. With grant funding from Business Link, a suitable vehicle was purchased and with in-kind support from the Borough Council and some funding from Lancashire County Council, the team has an established recycling site where they recycle aluminium, steel, cardboard and ink cartridges.
